mousquetons & dégaines

Mousquetons

carabiners & quickdraws

Carabiners

Always use a safety carabiner for belaying with the half-cabestan (or half-knot or half-batelier), in which case it will be « pear » shaped; also for attaching the descender to the harness, for installing a main belay or for installing a fixed rope, in which case it will be more elongated.

To mark a carabiner, avoid using an awl or hacksaw, which reduce its strength. Check carabiners regularly. Especially the finger locking mechanism.

Quickdraws

A quickdraw is made up of two carabiners linked by a strap. The carabiner with the straight finger is placed on the fixed point and the carabiner with the bent finger on the rope. Change the webbing or the whole quickdraw after a fall. Never use a quickdraw if you don’t know where it came from.

However, the sheer breadth of the range of carabiners now available is perplexing.
Here’s some information to help you make your choice.
