the approach walk

Departure from the refuge will depend on the planned route and after asking the warden for advice. In any case, leave as early as possible.

« We rarely regret leaving too early, but we always regret leaving too late » Gaston Rebuffat liked to say.

Most of the time, the start will be at night. For this reason, the day before, you will have taken care to recognise part of the route while it is still daylight. Make sure your headlamp is in perfect working order.

Check the route by monitoring the azimuth, altitude and walking time, referring to the route plan.

Don’t necessarily follow the lights of the roped parties ahead. They may not be on the same course as you.

We rope up whenever necessary; It’s a question of judgement and experience. However, you should always rope up on a snow-covered glacier.

Warning: the rope is used to arrest a fall
not to multiply the number of victims
